The compression tester developed by Bayerteq is an advanced, high-rigidity testing machine purpose-built exclusively for evaluating the compressive mechanical properties, ring stiffness, and long-term creep behavior of plastic pipes and polymer profiles. Unlike universal testing machines designed for general tensile pulling, this dedicated compression tester provides ultra-stiff dual-column load frames optimized specifically for parallel-plate loading in strict accordance with international standards including ISO 9969, ISO 9967, and ASTM D2412.

Rigid pipes installed underground are continuously subjected to external soil loads and hydraulic traffic pressures. The Bayerteq compression tester accurately quantifies critical engineering characteristics including nominal stiffness (SN values), ring flexibility without wall cracking, flattening resistance, compressive yield strength, compressive modulus, and time-dependent creep ratios under sustained compression.

Compression Tester Configurations & Modular Load Frames

To accommodate diverse pipe diameter ranges from small electrical conduits up to large-diameter structured-wall sewage pipes, Bayerteq offers tailored force and frame configurations:

  • BT CT 30 kN to 100 kN Series: Dual-column load frames designed for laboratory quality control of smooth and corrugated thermoplastic pipes up to medium diameters, delivering high displacement resolution and smooth crosshead travel.
  • BT CT 150 kN to 300 kN Series: Extra-rigid heavy-duty floor frames engineered for high-stiffness industrial pipes, thick composite sections, and high-load long-term creep evaluations requiring uninterrupted loading over weeks.
  • Spherically Seated Compression Platens: Hardened and polished parallel compression plates equipped with a spherical seat mechanism that automatically self-aligns up to 4° with non-parallel pipe ends, eliminating uneven point loading.
  • Integrated Climate Chamber (CT-CH Option): Built-in environmental chamber allowing ring creep and flattening tests to be conducted at elevated service temperatures (40 °C, 60 °C, or 110 °C) to simulate severe operational environments.
  • Precision Deflection Measurement: Features outside diameter (OD) tracking via high-resolution optical encoders and inside diameter (ID / DN) contact sensors mounted on ergonomic swing arms for direct bore monitoring.

Every Bayerteq compression tester is driven by maintenance-free AC servo motors and dual backlash-free preloaded ball screws, fully certified according to CE machinery directives and the IEC 60947 standard.

Key Operational & Engineering Advantages

Ultra-Rigid Dual-Column Load Frame

Constructed with heavy-gauge crossheads and pre-stressed columns to minimize frame deflection during high-load compression and weeks-long creep testing.

Spherically Seated Platens (±4°)

Self-aligning spherical seats compensate for non-parallel sample cut faces. For platens ≥100 mm, a robust locking mechanism fixes alignment during testing.

Dual Deflection Tracking (OD & ID)

Simultaneously captures external plate displacement via motor encoders and internal bore deflection using contact transducers on an articulated swing arm.

Intelligent BT Software Control

Pre-programmed standard test routines for ISO 9969 and ASTM D2412 with automatic zeroing, continuous strain-rate control, and automated SN stiffness calculation.

Integrated Climate Chamber Option

Performs combined mechanical compression and thermal aging up to 110 °C inside a dedicated chamber, essential for long-term creep ratio validation per ISO 9967.

CE & IEC 60947 Safety Compliance

Equipped with electronic load cell limits, hardware travel switches, emergency stop push-buttons, and interlocked safety guards to ensure comprehensive laboratory protection.

System Modules & Optional Tooling

1. Compression Platens Range

Standard parallel plates (up to 1,200 × 1,200 mm) or spherically seated self-aligning platens (±4°) with hardened, polished wear-resistant surfaces.

2. Internal Diameter (DN) Measurement Kit

Contact probe extensometer mounted on an articulated positioning swing arm to monitor exact internal diametric reduction during testing.

3. Thermal Environmental Chamber

High-precision heating chamber with forced air circulation and PID temperature regulation from ambient up to +110 °C for accelerated creep testing.

Industry Standards & Practical Applications

The Bayerteq compression tester is designed for quality control laboratories, pipe extrusion plants, and research institutes:

  • Ring Stiffness Testing (ISO 9969 / ASTM D2412): Determination of initial ring stiffness (SN 2, SN 4, SN 8, SN 16) by compressing pipe specimens to 3% diametric deflection at constant loading speed.
  • Ring Flexibility Evaluation (ISO 13968): Compression of thermoplastic pipes to 30% or higher deflection to inspect for structural wall cracking, delamination, or permanent buckling.
  • Long-Term Creep Ratio (ISO 9967): Continuous application of constant compressive load over 1,008 hours (42 days) or accelerated periods to extrapolate 50-year creep ratios.
  • Conduit Compression Resistance (EN 61386): Verification of electrical and communications conduit systems under defined compressive crush forces.
  • Flattening Tests (ISO 2505 / EN 744): Post-thermal conditioning flattening tests on PVC-U, PVC-C, and PE pipes to identify internal residual stresses or resin defects.
