Overview
The Cometech QC-801E Tape Holding Power Tester measures the shear adhesion retention strength of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes — quantifying how long a tape can resist a constant parallel (shear) load before sliding or falling off a stainless steel test plate.
The test specimen is bonded to a vertical stainless steel plate over either a 1/2"×1" or 1"×1" contact area using a 2kg roller, and a counterweight is then hung from the lower end of the tape. The elapsed time until the tape detaches from the plate is recorded automatically by the timer — or, if the tape holds for the full test duration, the displacement distance of the tape is measured instead.
The QC-801E's non-contact sensing design detects tape fall-off without physical contact, eliminating false triggers from vibration or air movement, while the stack-type weight system allows fine-grained load adjustment down to 150g — well below the standard 1kg — for testing light-duty adhesive products.
Working Principle
The machine is designed for parallel (shear) loading mode, not peel or tack — the counterweight pulls the tape downward along the plane of the steel plate, not away from it. This simulates the stress tapes experience in real-world vertical bonding applications such as hanging signs, sealing cartons, bundling cables, and mounting panels.
A 2kg load roller is used during specimen preparation to ensure uniform bonding pressure across the entire contact area before the counterweight is applied — following the standard conditioning protocol of ASTM D3654 and PSTC 7.
Once the counterweight is attached, the timer begins counting automatically. When the tape detaches, the non-contact sensor triggers and the timer locks the exact fall-off time. If the tape remains bonded at the end of the set time, the technician measures the sliding displacement of the tape from its original position.

Key Features
- Non-contact fall-off sensing — eliminates false triggers from vibration or air movement; records exact detachment moment
- Stack-type weight system — supports minimum load of 150g; weights combine freely for load customization beyond standard 1kg
- 10-jig simultaneous testing — run 10 specimens in parallel to drastically reduce total test time per batch
- Stacking machine design — multiple QC-801E units can be stacked vertically to expand test capacity without increasing floor footprint
- Auto-retention timer — starts automatically on test start, stops and locks time the instant tape falls off; no manual intervention needed
- Steel plate and weights manufactured to standard dimensions for data accuracy per ASTM D3654 and PSTC 7
- Cotton impact absorber at falling point — protects both the machine frame and counterweights from impact damage when tape releases
- Aluminum alloy and SUS#304 stainless steel test module for durability and corrosion resistance
- Two test area configurations — 1/2"×1" and 1"×1" — covering all common PSA tape shear test specifications
Application
- Shear adhesion holding power testing of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes
- Masking tape, packaging tape, double-sided tape, foam tape, medical tape QC and R&D
